Jeffery was blindsided by the truth about Jessica. He was furious but also disappointed more than anything.
He bent down, kissed Douglas and Daphne on their foreheads, and continued to soothe them. "I'm so sorry, sweethearts. I didn't think it through, and you ended up getting hurt. But don't worry. Grandma isn't leaving us. If you make up with her, she'll come back for sure."
Hope instantly sparked in Douglas and Daphne's eyes. "Really? When will you take us to see Grandma?"
"We'll look for her tomorrow," Jeffery said after a moment's thought. "When we see her, make sure you don't upset her. Apologize properly, okay?"
Douglas and Daphne had missed me so much that the last thing they wanted to do was act out. They nodded eagerly.
The next day, Jeffery brought them to Harthaven and waited at my usual route to block my way.
I was taken aback at the sight of them. I hadn't expected Jeffery to be this persistent, let alone bring Douglas and Daphne over.
