“Do you want to leave?” he asked.
His voice was even. Controlled. Like he was giving me a real choice.
But there was something deeper in his tone. A tremor. A hint of something feral beneath the words.
I looked at him, really looked.
And for once—I didn’t feel like I was falling apart.
I felt like I was standing at the edge of something I chose.
“Would you let me leave?” I asked him in return, my voice even but unguarded.
He tilted his head slightly, his eyes narrowing in that unnervingly calm way of his. A slow, knowing smile spread across his lips.
“If you did your research, little wolf,” he said, voice low and deliberate, “you’d know that anyone who breaks their promise with me ends up with their corpses found in the wilderness. Torn apart. Forgotten.”
I blinked.
Not because I’d believe he would do that to me—but because I believed he could.
He wasn’t feared and at the same time, respected by many.
He wasn’t branded as the strongest Alpha for nothing.
