Damian lowered his eyes, his voice dry. "Just because of that? I could also—"
Cynthia shook her head, cutting him off. "No, you couldn't. Because in your world, there's nothing more important than the justice you believe in.
"When I was at my most broken and helpless, you still chose your justice and turned a blind eye to me. I begged you so many times back then, but your answer was always that the evidence was conclusive."
Disappointment in a person was never sudden, but something that built up over time, bit by bit. She had been disappointed too many times, broken too many times. So, naturally, she had stopped hoping.
"So, there's no possibility for us anymore. Let's let each other go," she concluded.
Damian's eyes were bloodshot. Just as Cynthia turned to leave, he rasped out, "Cynthia, our divorce papers are invalid. If you marry Marcus now, you'll be committing bigamy. You're still my wife."
His words struck her like thunder, freezing her in place.
