I headed for the reception desk, trying to ignore Alpha Sherman and hoping he'd just leave.
Every step felt loud as drums in the quiet clinic, like everyone was watching me struggle.
My legs were heavy, weighed down by the bombshell I'd just been given.
I dug my phone out of my hoodie pocket with shaky hands to pay my bill.
As I tapped through the payment screen, the receptionist gave me that look – that too-understanding smile as her eyes drifted to the prescription poking out of my folder.
"All set, Ms.Brown. Take care of yourself, okay?" Her voice was sweet but knowing, like she'd seen countless she-wolves walk through these doors with the same scared eyes and trembling hands.
I nodded without speaking and turned to leave – only to slam right into a wall of muscle and expensive cologne.
