I could feel his eyes on me through the windshield—hot and intense like a wolf's stare during a hunt—but Alpha Sherman stayed where he was.
After what seemed like forever, he finally turned away.
He gave our car one last look before climbing into his fancy black SUV.
The door closed with a soft thump that somehow felt final.
I didn't realize I'd been holding my breath until his convoy started moving, tires making that crunchy sound on the pavement.
But even after he left, the knot in my chest remained tight as ever.
Mason tapped his fingers on the steering wheel beside me. "So... we're good? I won't ask questions."
His voice sounded casual, but there was something underneath it that made Keal shift uncomfortably inside me.
I glanced at him sideways.
Did he really understand?
Or was he just saying what he thought I wanted to hear?
He wasn't pushing for answers, which I appreciated, but his eyes told me everything—he didn't buy my lame excuses.
