My life was finally starting to feel like it was working out. For the first time in years, I wasn’t just surviving day to day, waiting for the next blow to knock me down. I was living.

I woke up with the sunlight spilling across the sheets, my body tangled in warmth, my cheek resting against the hard curve of his chest. His arm was wrapped tightly around my waist, keeping me pressed against him like he was afraid I might disappear if he let go.
For a long moment, I didn’t move. I just lay there, breathing in the faint scent of him—clean soap, warm skin, and something darker I couldn’t name but always made my heart skip.
His hand shifted against my waist, fingers brushing lazily against my skin. “You’re awake,” his voice was low and husky, still heavy with sleep.
I smiled into his chest. “So are you.”
“Mmm,” he hummed, tightening his hold. “I felt you watching me.”
“I wasn’t watching,” I said quickly, though my flushed cheeks betrayed me. “
