Chapter 260
"How much... how much does it cost?"
Reuben hadn't been going on well these years, and of course, he hoped to have a life-changing fortune.
Melissa responded with a slight smile
"That depends on how much you think you're worth."
Reuben pondered for a moment and made a gesture, saying, "I want three million. Can I just get it by filming?"
"Of course. Here I have a script for you. Just read it out and retell the story from more than seven years ago exactly as it was. That's all."
Melissa remarked casually, a gentle look in her eyes, and took out a script from her bag to hand it to Reuben.
Reuben glanced at it briefly and said fiercely, "That's no problem at all. But you have to wire me half of the money first."
"That's small stuff. We can go to a nearby bank later and deposit the money."
Melissa reassured, preparing to film with her phone. Reuben looked at Melissa in front of him with puzzlement, unaware of when this young girl had acquired wealth.
Moreover, her former good friend had become her enemy. The entanglement in all this must be really interesting. But Reuben has not paid attention to the news in society for many years.
The two quickly came to an agreement, and the filming was almost passed at once. As agreed, Melissa took Reuben to a nearby bank and wire transferred 3 million RMB into Reuben's account. Melissa's salary over the past few months had come in handy.
When she walked out of the bank front gate contentedly with the filming, she saw a car that had been following her!
Melissa did not hurry to dodge but walked straight up to tap on the car window. The man in the car was startled by her unusual action, and the stunned assistant Daniel had to roll down the window and ask feigned confusion.
"Excuse me, lady, do you want a ride?"
"You’ve been following me for more than two hours, aren’t you tired? How much is Joseph paying you?" Melissa said with an ironic smile on her face. She didn't understand how Joseph could have such an inefficient subordinate.
"Oh? My monthly pay?"
Assistant Daniel was a bit confused, having been identified as a detective on his first assignment.
"Kid, no matter how much you're paid, you shouldn't do things like this. It's not your business to get involved in this family matter."
Melissa said, putting on a bossy facade. Finding Joseph's assistant rather amusing, she chuckled.
Assistant Daniel guessed Melissa was the woman Joseph had been longing for, and he hurriedly got out of the car and said with a deferential laugh.
"Miss... please spare me. I’ll never take on such a detective job, it’s too hard!"
"I think highly of you. Focus on your work in the future." Melissa patted Assistant Daniel's shoulder, her heart filled with amusement as she thought today's greatest achievement was nabbing a private investigator.
"Yes, ma'am, we'll listen to you from now on!" Assistant Daniel was ready to plead for his life by any mean possible. He knew even Joseph had to bow down to this lady. He figured he’d better look out for himself sooner.
Melissa felt that Assistant Daniel was quite sharp. When this affair was over, she might speak highly of him to Joseph if she had a chance.
"So, how are you going to explain this to your boss?" Melissa half-jokingly asked him, her eyes filled with tender amusement.
"Don't worry, Sis. I won't sabotage the relationship between you and the boss!"
Daniel, the assistant, declared earnestly, then quickly climbed back into the car, waving with a smile.
"I've got to get going now. See you later, Sis."
"Sure, see you on Monday."
Melissa waved back at Daniel, convinced that not just anyone could become the assistant to Joseph. His lightning-fast responses were evidence of a long history at Joseph's side, hardened by the treacherous human relationships at the workplace.
On her way home, Melissa repeatedly watched the recording. She thought the three million was not as spectacular as the blossom. Once this clip was aired, Nancy's reputation could be ruined.
As noon approached, Peter leisurely strolled in the city, and somehow found himself standing below Amy's apartment. He sat on the stone steps for a couple of hours, then reluctantly trudged towards her door, yet hesitated, raising and lowering his arm continuously...
Finally, Peter knocked on Amy's door. But after a while, there was no response. Amy had gone home, taken a shower, and spent the whole time lying on the sofa, lost in contemplation. She hadn't spoken a single word in more than four hours. She was in a state of daydreaming.
"Amy, are you home? Amy?"
Peter knocked once again, listening carefully for any sign of movement within. It sounded like someone was inside, but it could also be the noise coming through the window from the hall.
A grandmotherly neighbor came out from the opposite corner, carrying a basket as if ready to go grocery shopping. She was surprised and delighted to see such a polite and gentlemanly visitor at Amy's door, presumably as no man had ever called at her home before.
"Young man, are you Amy's boyfriend?"
The elderly woman looked at Peter concernedly, then kindly asked
"Did you two have a fight?"
"No." Peter shook his head, offering the woman a restrained smile.
"I just came to see her, wondering if she's home."
"Yes, she's at home. I saw her coming home while I was sunning the cabbage in the hallway."
The neighbor, out of goodwill, informed Peter that she saw a fatigued Amy making her way home, without her usual greetings to the neighbors.
"Thank you," Peter politely thanked her, then knocked on the door once more; still, there was no answer. He knew that Amy must be upset with him and not wanting to see him, hence her silence.
The kindly old woman, assuming they'd had a quarrel, was slightly anxious seeing such a nice and polite young man being shut out.
"I can help you ask her," The old woman hung her shopping basket on her arm and began knocking on the door.
"Amy, it's me, Granny Felicia! Your boyfriend is here looking for you, why not have a chat and settle any disagreements..."
Before Granny Felicia could finish, Amy had already opened the door. She saw Granny Felicia and smiled warmly.
"I fell asleep accidentally. Be careful on your way to the market, Granny Felicia."
"Ah, good girl. Have a good talk with him."
Granny Felicia was still advising Amy warmly as she descended the stairs, but her kind and smiling face couldn't make Amy genuinely smile.
