Ella’s POV
For the second time that night, the cool wind rushed through my fur. But this time, it did not serve as a balm to my frayed nerves.
This time, it stung my eyes, my lips. It echoed the coldness I felt in my heart after running from Alexander, leaving him confused and angry in that hospital room.
All I could do was pray that he wouldn’t follow us. That we could buy just enough time to find the artifacts and burn them.
Then, and only then, could I tell Alexander the truth.
The guilt burned through me, but it was the only option I had. There was no knowing if the artifacts would actually be in the location Margaret had described in her journal, and until I was certain they could be found and destroyed, I couldn’t risk hurting Alexander.
He might never understand, but at least I would know that I hadn’t condemned him to death just as I had Liam.
