Maya's POV
The shock on their faces was genuine. They hadn’t confessed to anyone, not even each other, so hearing me confront them outright left them stunned. I had caught them, whether they liked it or not. I knew exactly what they had done, and I also knew they would never admit it.
They exchanged uneasy glances, clearly trying to figure out who had spilled the secret. It never occurred to them that I had overheard it by sheer accident. Watching them silently attempt to communicate, eyes flicking and expressions shifting, was almost comical. They were guilty, everyone could see it. A confession wasn’t even necessary.
Damien was the first to recover.
“Uh, Maya, I don’t even know what you’re talking about,” he said with feigned confusion. “You’re accusing us of something the police already ruled as a tragic accident. Clearly, you’re under a lot of stress, and understandably shaken since you didn’t expect us to come back for you. But this? This is slander,” he added, voice patronizing,
