Chapter 286 Is There Anything Out There That You Dare Not Do?
Sophia figured that Master Harris would come over to find out about the truth but did not expect him to come so soon.
Master Harris brought Ken into the ward and looked Sophia up and down with a sullen look on his face, saying sarcastically, "It didn’t take long for you to almost miscarry, huh? Could it be such a coincidence?"
"You know that Leah and I are incompatible with each other just like fire and water. I can’t be colluding with her and Mr. Jones to deceive you, can I?" Sophia carefully lifted the collar of her patient’s gown when Master Harris came in.
A couple is advised not to sleep together in the first three months of pregnancy. Master Harris would get suspicious if he saw the hickeys on her neck.
Master Harris harrumphed heavily; his expression eased up slightly.
"When Sophia arrived at the hospital after suffering a relapse, she even went through a medical procedure. If you don't believe it, you can go ahead and ask the surgeon." Charles said, "We can't possibly do anything under your nose, right?"
Sophia was lying on the bed. She might seem relaxed but every cell in her body was taut and her nerves were on edge.
"Did I give you permission to speak?!" Master Harris glared at Charles with frosty eyes.
"I was just telling the truth." Charles said, "Leah isn’t someone who will give up easily. Besides, the appliance market is just like a big piece of cake that’s placed right in front of her eyes. She will never let me be with Sophia, that’s why she tried to lay a finger on our child...."
Master Harris cut him off harshly. "Shut up!!!"
Charles looked down and said no more.
"Now you and everyone else think that I’m about to die that’s why you’re riding roughshod over me and even have the cheek to talk back to me now, huh?!" Master Harris's face was livid.
Charles lowered his head. "I wouldn’t dare."
"You wouldn’t dare?" Master Harris shifted his gaze to Sophia and said coldly, "If you’re brave enough to threaten me with a knife for a silly little girl, then is there anything out there that you dare not do?"
Charles said at an appropriate pace, "I was left with no choice at that time. I was worried that you would be upset after learning that you could have caused Sophia to miscarry, yet had no time to get into the details, that was why I was left with no choice but to do so."
"Hah!" Master Harris sneered, then covered his mouth and let out a cough.
Seeing this, Ken immediately took out a handkerchief and handed it to him. He took the handkerchief, wiped the corners of his mouth whilst covering it with his hand, then clenched the handkerchief in his hand.
Master Harris was about to say something when Charles' phone started ringing. It was a call from the company.
"I’m sorry, I have to take this. This is from the company." Charles explained succinctly and answered.
Master Harris frowned and sat on a chair. Ken walked over immediately and poured some water into a paper cup for him.
"Mm. I got it. I'll be there right away." Charles hung up the call and said to Master Harris with a smile hanging on the corner of his lips. "The police are done with the checks. They said that there’s nothing wrong on my side."
There was a flash of astonishment on Master Harris' face. Immediately after that, darkness started flashing over his face.
"I'm going to the company to finish up the handover procedure. I’ll leave Sophia under your care." Charles said, "Leah is also in the hospital. In the case of an accidental miscarriage, Sophia and I are still young, so we can easily conceive again, but you may not necessarily get to live until then."
Master Harris snarled out, "Are you threatening me?!"
"I’m just telling the truth." Charles walked to the bed and planted a kiss on Sophia's forehead, saying gently, "Be good. I'm going to the company to handle some things now. I'll come back to accompany you at night."
A layer of goosebump broke out on Sophia’s skin when she noticed the pampering look in his eyes when he told her to be good and responded with a slightly unnatural look on her face.
"Tell Grandpa if you’re in danger, you know where his ward is." Charles took her hand and reminded her again before standing up and walking out.
Wearing a sullen look on his face, Master Harris looked as though he wanted to say something but merely snorted coldly in the end and turned around to walk toward the door.
Ken followed behind him.
When he was at the door, Master Harris stopped in his tracks suddenly and ordered Ken. "You stay here. If anyone comes and pester Sophia, just throw them out. Don’t even bother wasting time on nonsense."
"What about you?" Ken hesitated to ask.
After asking him to leave him alone, Master Harris then strode out the door and slammed the door shut with a bang, leaving Sophia and Ken alone in the ward.
Ken was once ordered by Master Harris’ to send Sophia to prison, but she ended up inserting her ear stud into his temple in order to escape.
Logically speaking, it was supposed to be slightly awkward for two people who used to have a conflict with each other to stay in the same space together. However, Ken simply sat on a chair and opened his mobile phone, whereas Sophia laid on the bed and stared at the ceiling. They both treated each other as though they were invisible, so it was not exactly awkward either.
During this period of time, Ken's phone vibrated and he said to her, "Mr. Harris wants me to tell you that Mr. Jones has broken off his marriage contract with the Sommer family today. He has also published an apology letter that was nearly three thousand words long to the media."
"Aren't you worried that Master Harris will think of you as being disloyal for passing on the news for him?" Sophia turned her head to look at him.
Ken glanced at her, ignored her, and continued to browse his phone.
Sophia did not feel awkward either and turned away from him with a mild countenance. William had actually broken off his marriage contract with the Sommer family. Did the Jones family allow him to do so, though?
Charles had not returned yet when it was about dinnertime. Jenny and James had both turned up again with her favorite dishes. The family of three sat down together to have a meal. It was rare that for once, there no argument had broken out amongst them.
Seeing that Sophia had no intention to drive the couple away, Ken continued to sit on the chair and perused his phone.
When they were almost done eating, James finally asked, "Leah nearly caused you to miscarry?"
"There is no need to ask me a question that you already know the answer to, right?" Sophia put down her chopsticks and said sarcastically, "Or perhaps you’re trying to feign ignorance just like the car accident two years ago, then distort the truth and put all the blame on me?”
Jenny's face alternated between red and blue. She looked incredulously at James. "Was that really what you were thinking about?"
"Don’t chime in," James said to her with a frown. When he turned to look at Sophia, his expression had smoothed out tremendously. "Master Harris has taken necessary actions and has personally given both Joneses, father and daughter a warning on this matter."
Ken was just sitting next to them, but he did not say much.
Sophia was slightly surprised but it did not show on her face.
Master Harris seemed to have gone to warn the Jones father and daughter as soon as he left her ward. He cared about this child more than she thought…
"I think Master Harris is quite happy to have you as his granddaughter-in-law." James said, "But you are all alone now. This won’t be easy to deal with even if you marry Charles. Why don’t you go back to the White residence first?"
Ken glanced in their direction nonchalantly after hearing what he said, then continued staring at his phone.
As if afraid that Sophia would decline, James added a few more words in a haste, "If you’re unhappy after returning, then you can move out at any time. Apart from that, you can also list out other conditions if you have any. What do you think?"
