Chapter 287 I Can Do Anything
Jenny echoed him at once. "That’s right, Soph. As long as you come home, you can list out any conditions that you have! You were dissatisfied with your dad for not involving you and Sterling in the company, right? I can transfer all twenty percent of the shares under my name to you both!"
"Cough." James let out a dry cough and said, "We’ll talk about this next time. At the very least, Soph and Sterling need to enter the company to learn something first."
Jenny was displeased. "Them learning something in the company and me transferring my shares to them are completely unrelated!"
"Of course they’re unrelated. Mr. White doesn’t want you to transfer your shares to Sterling and me." Sophia said sarcastically, "If you transfer these shares to Mr. White, I’m sure he will not refuse.”
Jenny's face paled when she heard what she said.
"Soph, you think of me as a person that’s far too sinister." James said sternly and forcefully, "I didn’t want your mother to transfer the shares to both of you simply because I was worried that you will both be cheated after you receive the shares!"
Sophia asked, "If that’s the case, do you think Charles will be cheated?"
James’ eyes flashed. Before he could answer, she said, “Madam White can transfer the shares to me and I will ask Charles to manage them for me. With that, Mr. White won’t have to worry anymore, right?”
"That’s not the only thing that I’m worried about." Her aggressive attitude had James frowning with displeasure. "If you’re already behaving like that before your mother has even transferred the shares to you, then wouldn’t you ride roughshod over her once she transferred everything to you?"
After hearing what he said, Jenny hastened to say, “I have faith in Soph and I trust that she won’t do that. I can do anything as long as Soph agrees to come home!"
She did not even hesitate for the slightest moment. It was thus clear that she actually meant it.
Sophia felt pretty bad when she looked at her glistening and expectant eyes.
Mom could actually give anything up for the sake of a peaceful family. It was a pity that…
James subconsciously wanted to decline but his words took on another form when they reached his mouth. "...Your mother has sacrificed so much. I’m sure you can finally agree to come home now, right?"
Silence.
Seeing how Sophia was still hesitating when he had already made so many concessions, James’ countenance did not look very good.
Jenny, on the other hand, looked at Sophia expectantly, her heart in her mouth.
"Since Mom has already made so many concessions, I will be too ignorant if I insist on turning you down." Sophia said, "I still have two conditions, though."
When Jenny heard Sophia calling her mom again, tears welled up in her eyes immediately and dribbled down her cheeks.
"Go ahead," James said.
Sophia said, "Firstly, like what Dad said, I want to go back to the company with Sterling to learn; secondly, Charles will go home with me."
As soon as her voice fell, James sprung up from his seat and said in a resolute and decisive manner, "No way!"
"Why... not?" Jenny wiped her tears and glared at him, retorting. "We’ve agreed before coming here. As long as... as long as Soph comes home, we’ll agree to anything!"
It was only then did James realize that he had overreacted a little. He softened his tone and said, "Soph doesn't know how to do anything, what is she going to do in the company? She is unfit to take on a high position and can’t endure the hardship if she starts from the bottom. I know her all too well."
"How do you know that I can't stand it when I haven’t even tried, Dad?" Sophia said slowly, "Or perhaps you’re worried that Sterling and I will perform too well that you will be forced to hand over the company to us?"
Jenny's countenance changed unpredictably as she looked closely at James.
"If you insist that you can handle it, then there’s not much that I can say either. If you want to join the company, I can make arrangements for you, but you and Charles are neither engaged nor married. What would others say about you if you ask him to move into the White residence?" James asked.
Sophia looked straight at him and asked, "Why should I care what others say?"
"You are too young to understand this. Gossip is a fearful thing!" James sat down again, knocking over his chopsticks by accident as they fell to the ground with a clatter.
He looked down but did not pick them up, then stepped on them and kicked them aside.
Sophia wiped the corners of her mouth with a tissue and sneered. "I’ve been the talk of the town for two years now and I’m still standing here today."
"That’s enough. Stop arguing. It’s decided." Jenny's eyes were red and swollen. She still looked gentle and soft as usual, but her voice sounded particularly resounding and forceful this time.
"I plan to transfer my shares to Soph and Sterling when I get back. James, you will arrange a position for Soph in the company. When Soph recovers, she will go home with Charles and they will stay together. It’s decided."
James was about to say something but swallowed his words back in when his eyes met the cold smile hanging on the corners of Sophia’s mouth.

Harris Corporation’s meeting room.
Master Harris was sitting at the head of the table. Seated on his left were Oscar Harris and the rest who owned shares in the company as well as several other shareholders who had a say in the company. Among them, Mr. Fredrickson was absent and replaced by his secretary.
Seated on his right were Justin, Charles, and the senior executives of Harris Corporation accordingly.
The meeting started with the reports made by several senior executives on the company's recent progress. Subsequently, Ted gave a rundown of the company’s development direction in the last two years according to Master Harris’ instructions.
When the discussions ended, Master Harris’ gaze swept around the table and asked, "Is there anything else that anyone would like to say?"
"I would like to say something." Oscar raised his hand whilst grinning. Instead of saying it out directly, he asked Mr. Jake, who was sitting diagonally across the table, "Mr. Jake, were you the one who got in touch with the inspector?"
Mr. Jake nodded.
Oscar said, "I heard that the investigation has ended today and that Charles is innocent, right?"
"Yes." Mr. Jake said, "The former chief financial director insisted that Mr. Harris has embezzled public funds and has also threatened him to tamper with the accounts."
"After the investigation, however, it was found that the accounts had indeed been tampered with, but Mr. Harris has nothing to do with it. The chief financial director also admitted that he was the one that was blinded by greed and embezzled public funds. He is now under investigation at the police station. The specific results are still unclear.”
Master Harris took over the conversation and said, "I’m obviously glad to hear that it is possible to prove that Charles has nothing to do with the embezzlement of public funds. It goes without saying that the Harris family members still know better than to embezzle public funds."
He looked around the table and gave the final word. "Nothing else, right? The meeting is over!"
As soon as his voice fell, he had already stood up and was prepared to walk out.
"Don't be so anxious, Dad." Oscar stood up, grabbed his arm, and said helplessly, "I haven't finished talking yet."
Charles and several other shareholders and the company’s senior executives were not surprised by this at all. In fact, only Master Harris, Ted, and Justin were surprised.
"Must you discuss it in the meeting? Can’t you talk about this at home?" Master Harris was already displeased.
Oscar laughed. "If I can talk about it at home then I wouldn’t be raising it in the meeting anymore. I need all the shareholders here to be witnesses and participants."
"Uncle Oscar, why didn’t you mention it earlier if you need to discuss something important?" Justin said softly, "The length of the meeting has been decided earlier on. I’m afraid you will only delay everyone’s time if you insist on having everyone here to discuss this."
