Chapter 194 A Boyfriend Like You

With that, she ignored everybody and walked away in a huff with the lady in tow. Mr. Grant looked like he wished he was anywhere else but here as he glanced at Yvette timidly. Yvette's expression darkened instantly, and she glared at me with a frown. "She can't boss me around," said Yvette. "Of course I know that. Who could possibly boss you around?" I asked. How could I have ended up marrying her if Alex hadn't threatened me, and she had agreed to choose me? Although Yvette respected her elders, nobody could interfere with her life unless she allowed it. I snickered and said, "Your mother is hilarious. As if I was willing to get involved with the Jenning family again. I won't be bothered even if she were to beg me next time." Clover giggled and said, "What's so great about the Jenning family anyway? You should choose someone like me for a wife. Young women are way better than old ladies." I was speechless, and I believed Yvette now. How did a youngster like Clover be so good at this? She must have many friends. However, I said nothing because I knew that she was just pissing Yvette off to stand up for me. Yvette shot Clover a death stare. "Your mind is corrupted and you're not that innocent. Owen wouldn't want you unless he's switched careers and become a garbage collector," hissed Yvette. Clover's expression grew stormy. She seemed to be taken aback by Yvette's sharp tongue. She hugged me and started whining pretentiously. "Owen, she's being mean to me. No one has ever spoken to me like that. You love me, don't you? You're not as heartless as she says," whined Clover. How dramatic. But she would surely lose if she fought with Yvette, so I'd better give her a way out. I patted her head and said, "Of course I love you. Let's go." Now, it was Yvette's turn to look upset and even Mr. Grant looked uneasy. Clover started flirting. "You're the best, Owen. Why didn't your ex-wife appreciate a good man like you? If I had a boyfriend like you, I would shower him with love," cooed Clover. I got goosebumps, and I thought I'd heard enough. I tried my best to play along and said sweetly, "If I had met a girl like you sooner, I would surely…" "Die," said Yvette expressionlessly. I looked up at Yvette and found her glaring at me. "Are you blind? Can't you tell what kind of person she is? I know we're divorced, but must you really be this desperate and throw yourself into a new relationship?" asked Yvette. I frowned and asked, "Are you lecturing me?" Yvette looked indifferent, but there was a hint of self-mockery in her gaze. "Let me offer you a bit of advice. Even though we're divorced, you shouldn't let your taste in women drop so drastically. It makes you look desperate. "And if you get involved with her, not only will you get some sort of disease, but also get thrown away like trash in the end," said Yvette. Before I could say anything, Clover spoke up in a rage. Her chest heaved with every word she said. "I've had enough of you. You keep insulting me as if I'm some kind of virus. What do you mean he'll get a disease? There are dozens of guys who like me, but I chose my darling Owen. "Doesn't that show my sincerity? I'm not a playgirl like you. I'll be good to Owen for the rest of my life!" spat Clover. Yvette narrowed her eyes and said coldly, "Only ignorant people talk about forever. You should get your brain checked before you talk to me." Clover wanted to talk back, but I pulled her arm. I stared at Yvette and said sarcastically, "I don't play with the same woman twice. Meeting different kinds of women is what makes life interesting. "Clover and I are on the same page about this and that's why we get along. She's different from…innocent-looking women like you. Stop getting jealous, Ms. Jenning. It's not a good look. And stop poking your nose into my business." Yvette was indeed a self-respecting woman, but that was nothing to do with me. She suddenly looked ready to kill someone and glared at me fiercely. I shuddered and thought I must have crossed a line. I quickly tugged Clover's arm and left. "Just ignore her. She's just looking for an excuse to fight with me. The auction is about to start. Let's hurry," I said. Clover followed me, but she turned around and waved her fist at Yvette. "Owen, I don't like her. I thought she ignored her mother to protect you at first, but she scolded us the moment her mom left. A woman like her won't do. I'm more gentle, thoughtful, and loving to my husband," said Clover. I couldn't help but to sigh when I saw that she was pink in the cheeks from anger. Yvette was mean to everybody. She looked down on Lila the same way. "She likes to bully people who are younger and less educated than her. But I have to remind you that you shouldn't be too playful. Have some respect for people's feelings or you'll get karma sooner or later," I said. Clover immediately protested loudly. "Owen, you mustn't believe her. I really didn't fool around with boys. I just like to flirt with them a little, but it never went further than that. I know my limits." "Okay. It's good that you know what you're doing," I said and headed toward the private booth. Clover's phone rang. She answered it and said, "I'm at an auction with Owen. What's up? Oh, I'll be there in a second." She hung up and said, "Owen, my brother wants me to get something for him at the entrance. You can head inside first. I'll be right back." "Okay. Be quick," I said, and Clover left. I failed to notice that Mr. Grant was in a corner wiping cold sweat off his forehead while watching the drama unfold. "Ms. Jenning, should we head to the private booth or meet Mr. Diaz?" he asked.
