The rundown rental apartment was bathed in dim, yellow light.
Daphne sat at her little sewing machine, glasses perched on her nose. She was carefully mending the cuff of an old shirt for Cressida.
The sound of the door opening made her look up. "Cressie? Is that you?"
When she saw Tristan following behind Cressida, the wrinkles on her face spread into a delighted smile. "Oh my, Dr. Leigh is here too! Come in, come in, have a seat!"
Daphne bustled to her feet, busying herself with serving them drinks and snacks.
"Grandma, don't trouble yourself," Cressida said, setting her bag down and quickly steadying her grandmother. "We've already eaten."
"Even so, you should drink something." Daphne pressed a glass into Tristan's hand and tugged him down onto the small sofa. "Dr. Leigh, I can't thank you enough. If it weren't for you, these old bones of mine…"
"Just call me Tristan," he interrupted gently, a warm smile curving his lips. "Your health is a blessing to us."
