Chapter 284
“I don’t know why he’s here, but that doesn’t matter. What matters is he is my…”
“What is he to you, hmm?”
Before Giselle could finish her sentence, her jaw was tightened. Maverick had somehow closed the distance between them. He tilted her chin up, his dark gaze intently held hers.
Cold and unyielding.
Giselle was frozen for an instance because of his stare.
It was in this moment that Maverick lowered his voice. He leaned closer to her, his teeth gritted in frustration. "Giselle, don't push your luck."
Then, he let go of her chin and placed his hand on her shoulder. Slowly tightening his grip, putting effort in. "Don't forget how tirelessly you plotted to marry me, to put all your previous hard work to waste for a dying man. Is it worth it?"
“Maverick, Patrick is my brother."
Giselle felt there was nothing that could explain her situation better than this sentence.
Patrick was her brother. What could possibly have happened between them?
Maverick's grip on her shoulder didn't lessen. "Your brother…," he sneered, "your dear Brother Patrick, right?"
The image of Giselle following Patrick and affectionately calling him "Brother Patrick" resurfaced in his mind. Such a scene only fueled his jealousy and anger.
“Do you have any heart at all?”
Maverick gripped tightly onto Giselle’s shoulder, his gaze filled with intense scrutiny and discontent. “I’ve been so good to you; what do you take me for, Giselle? You think you’ve got me wrapped around your finger?”
“Maverick, Patrick is truly my brother. You have to believe me,” Giselle raised her voice.
"I really want to believe you," Maverick chuckled softly, mockingly. Then, he looked coldly at Giselle, "Is it fun to deceive me?"
"I didn't lie to you."
"Do your vitamins taste good?"
Giselle paused. In this situation, if Giselle couldn't catch on to what Maverick was implying, she must be really slow.
"You knew?"
Maverick tugged at his lower lip, "I really wish I didn't."
"Maverick..." Giselle opened her mouth, unsure of how to explain, "I didn't mean to deceive you."
She wasn’t ready to have a child so soon, and with Maverick being so eager to have a child, she felt powerless and resorted to this tactic as a last resort.
"There are times when you do this intentionally?" Maverick scoffed, "You have so many excuses, do you think I should believe you?"
Maverick looked at Giselle emotionlessly.
Giselle sat stiffly on the bed.
She knew, Maverick would not believe her.
No matter what she said, he would not believe.
"I'm sorry," she apologized again, her voice was very low, she dropped her gaze, "Hiding it from you was my fault. Whether you believe it or not, I still have to say this; I have nothing with Patrick, he is my..."
Bang-
The word 'Brother' hadn't completely fallen when the door of the ward was forcefully closed again.
Staring at the thick door, Giselle suddenly felt so tired.
She laid back down, eyes open, tears silently trailed down her cheeks, eventually soaking into her pillow. After a long while, she reached out to touch her face.
When she opened her eyes again, it was dawn.
A lot of people had gathered in Giselle's ward.
The moment she had just opened her eyes, Liyana was already kneeling before her.
"Please save Patrick."
Giselle was hardly awake and this scene startled her so that she was taken aback for quite some while. She blinked, just about to get up, when Vanessa also knelt down. She said, "Giselle, in consideration of Patrick having risked his life to save you, could you please save Patrick?"
"Patrick...he..."
"He's in a bad state, he had severe anemia already, and because he saved you, his condition worsened. If he doesn't get a kidney transplant soon, he's going to die."
The last sentence was barely out when Vanessa's tears flowed out.
Giselle's hand was trembling as she supported herself on the side of the bed. She said, "I'll save him, I'll save him..."
Even if they did not beg her, Giselle would have still done it.
Because that man was Patrick, the one who had been protecting her all these years, her...brother.
"Who gave you permission to save him?"
Maverick appeared at the ward's door when Liyana knelt down. However, this group of people was so focused, so absorbed in their actions, that no one noticed him.
Were they asking Giselle to donate a kidney?!
Over his dead body.
As Maverick strode in with his long legs, all eyes were on him, without exception, and not in a friendly way. The only exception was Giselle, who wanted to persuade him.
"Maverick, Patrick is my brother, I cannot refuse to save him."
"Gloria is also your sister, however, I wasn't aware that you started caring so much about family ties."
Maverick glanced at Giselle, then shifted his gaze to Liyana and Vanessa. He spoke in a calm tone, "If you want to kneel, continue kneeling. But, I'm sorry, I can't do anything about this kidney."
"Maverick." Liyana heard and got very emotional, standing up quickly from the floor. "I am begging Giselle, not you."
"I am the one to decide what happens to her kidney."
Her tone was still mild, yet there was an underlying certainty that left no room for negotiation.
"Don't forget, Maverick, that Giselle's life was saved by Patrick!"
Vanessa reminded.
"Are you bringing up this old debt with me?" Maverick squinted, "How much blood did Patrick lose? I'll repay him tenfold."
"Can you afford to repay it?"
"Can you afford Giselle's kidney?"
As Maverick's words came out with emphasis, there was a standoff on the scene.
In the end, it was Giselle who clutched Maverick's arm. She couldn't turn a blind eye to someone in danger, especially when that person was Patrick. She truly couldn't.
"Maverick, I have to save him."
"I forbid it!"
"Maverick..."
"Giselle, I won't allow it!"
Maverick's voice was notably firm, "I won’t allow you to do this, do you understand?"
Giselle bit her lip.
Vanessa said, "Giselle, Patrick really is running out of time, don't you want to see him die?"
Liyana said, "Your mother owed me in the past, you have to pay her debts."
Maverick said, "If you dare to agree, just try it!"
In the end——
Giselle nodded her head, she said, "I'm sorry, Maverick, I cannot refrain from saving him."
Giselle along with Liyana and Vanessa walked through the front doors of the first hospital. After Giselle nodded in agreement, Maverick walked out, slamming the door behind him.
Perhaps, he was incredibly disappointed with her.
However, she genuinely couldn’t do it. She thought, even if this person wasn’t Patrick, but someone else, as long as that person was her brother, she couldn’t just stand by without helping him.
Before the compatibility testing, Giselle went to visit Patrick in the hospital ward.
He was not fully conscious, but he recognized her.
As Giselle approached him, he stretched out a hand and forcefully pushed her away. However, in his weakened state, he had no strength to actually push Giselle away.
"I don't want your kidney. I won't allow you to do this."
"Right now, I'm the only one who can save you."
"I don’t want it!"
