Chapter 285
Patrick was continuously pushing Giselle away, continually uttering 'I don't want to,'. To such an extent that his actions almost caused him to fall off the hospital bed, but Ben managed to support him in time.
Ben glanced at Patrick, and then at Giselle, his emotions were complex.
It was only days ago that he found out that Giselle is actually Chen Patrick's sister.
No wonder --
He thought, no wonder Patrick, who had originally planned to propose to Giselle, had suddenly left Makassa.
Anyone put in this position would not be able to handle it.
Who would have thought that these lovers would end up being siblings?
However, he felt a sense of relief.
If it were not for this, there would not be any salvation for Patrick.
Patrick's body was undeniably weak. In a short while, he had become powerless. As he lay on the hospital bed, the nurses hung up an IV drip for him which also contained a sleeping drug. Before he drifted back asleep again, he tightly held onto Giselle's wrist, "Giselle, you mustn't."
Once he fell asleep.
Giselle stepped out of the ward. Unexpectedly, she saw Harrison in the corridor, arguing with Chen's father.
As Giselle walked closer, she heard Harrison curse, "I've raised Giselle for so many years, on what grounds do you want her kidney."
In the past, Giselle held such resentment for Harrison, as she felt that he was too terrible to her as a father.
Now, she finally understood the reason.
It was truly a generous act of Harrison to not kick her out of the house.
"Could you both stop arguing?" Giselle moved towards them and pleaded, "I'm about to go in for tissue typing, please, could you just stop arguing?"
This was the first time Harrison had heard Giselle speak so softly and cordially. His gaze hardened for a moment, then he said, "Even though you're not my daughter, and I don't have any feelings for you, I still want to tell you this - he never cared for you all these years. You really don't need to donate your kidney to his son."
Giselle didn't respond.
Throughout the waiting period for test results, she kept looking back towards the direction of the hospital gate.
Just that--
It seemed like she had truly been abandoned.
Probably because she was numb, aside from the intermittent pain in her heart, Giselle didn't display any noticeable reaction.
"Giselle, I'll accompany you to get your blood drawn."
Vanessa walked over and said to Giselle.
Before undergoing a kidney transplant, you need to undergo three compatibility tests which include blood typing, tissue typing, and cross-matching, all of which require a blood sample.
Giselle followed Vanessa to the blood draw area, and a rubber band was tied around her arm. Due to the numerous tests needed, they had to draw three tubes of blood from her. As a result, the already weak Giselle nearly fell down due to dizziness when she tried to stand up.
Thankfully, someone managed to steady her.
"Thank you."
Giselle subconsciously thought it was Vanessa, thanking and looking up simultaneously. The moment their eyes met, Giselle's eyes inexplicably ached a little.
"Maverick..."
Maverick's lips were tightly pressed. He ignored Giselle, instead bent over and carried her.
Giselle, wrapping her arms around Maverick's neck, buried her head into his chest.
"This way."
Vanessa led the way ahead, leading Maverick into a ward. After Maverick laid Giselle on the hospital bed, he left without giving Giselle a chance to converse.
"Don’t worry, you can tell Maverick really cares about you. He wouldn’t come to the hospital otherwise. He's not going to divorce you just because you give Patrick a kidney."
Giselle lifted her gaze faintly, looking at Vanessa.
Vanessa said, "Surely, you wouldn't not donate a kidney just because you're worried Maverick might abandon you?" He seemed quite concerned.
Giselle closed her eyes, not uttering a word. She was prepared. Maverick was no fool, he didn’t need to always pick up the tab for her decisions.
Before she knew it, she had drifted off to sleep and woke up to an empty ward.
Giselle threw off the quilt, got out of bed, and left the room. Her ward was right next to Patrick's. Sounds could be heard coming from it.
"I’ve said it, I don’t want Giselle’s kidney. Can't you guys respect my wishes!"
Liyana replied, "Even if she donates a kidney to you, she can still live well. I'm only asking her to donate a kidney, not for her life. Besides, it was voluntary."
"Have you ever considered her? She's still so young, she doesn’t even have kids yet…”
"Aren't you young? Is death what you really wish for, as though there's nothing in this world worth clinging onto?"
Living had been worse than death for him!
Patrick took a deep breath. He couldn't utter those words, but indeed, being alive felt worse than death. He even wished to depart from this world a bit faster...
Before Giselle found out he was her brother.
But, it was too late!
When Giselle stepped into the room, it was at the quietest moment. She had entered because their quarreling had stopped. With a slight smile on her lips, she looked at the bedridden Patrick and said, "It's universally agreed that a sister should save her brother. I volunteered, and you shouldn't feel pressured."
Patrick's pale face had become even paler.
Simultaneously, the door was vehemently pushed open.
Director Chen walked in carrying a blood report. He looked furious.
“Have you clarified that they share no blood relation at all?”
“What did you proclaim?”
Both Patrick's father and mother raised their voices simultaneously. They could hardly believe it, and neither could the others in the room.
Doctor Chen stated, “Although they both belong to type A blood group, they indeed share no blood relation.”
"Could you have made a mistake?" Vanessa panicked immediately as Doctor Chen shook his head, followed by a sigh.
Vanessa stepped backward. "Then, does this mean Patrick....." was beyond saving.
Vanessa stared blankly at Patrick, who was lying on the hospital bed.
Patrick gradually recovered from his shock. After a while, a smile played across his lips - a smile that spoke of heartfelt joy.
Giselle was not his sister. Not his sister at all!
This was a tremendous surprise for Patrick. But as his laughter faded, a hint of redness welled up in the corners of his eyes.
It was too late!
He could no longer have her, and he had also lost her.
As Patrick looked at Giselle with red-rimmed eyes, she too looked back at him. In that shared gaze, tears fell from Giselle's eyes. "I...," she said, "I can no longer save you."
Patrick could only smile in return. "Giselle, I'm very happy. There's nothing that could make me happier."
In just a few short days, Giselle felt as though she had lived through a century.
Upon learning that Giselle and Patrick weren't siblings, Harrison had his blood tested, and did something he had never dared to do in his life - a paternity test.
And the result was that Giselle was his daughter, his biological daughter.
Harrison slumped onto the ground.
How laughable. He had once staunchly believed that Giselle wasn't his real daughter because she was born prematurely, and because she bore no resemblance to him.
Furious and resentful, he loved Joanna. He had never cast a doubt in front of her, but every time he saw Giselle, he felt stifled and uncomfortable. That's why, during Joanna's postpartum period, he started an affair with Davina, and fathered his own child, which in his view, was fair.
He still loved Joanna dearly and could even act the part of a good father in front of Giselle for her sake.
But she went ahead and took her own life because of Davina and Gloria, which was utterly unreasonable!
