CHAPTER TWO HUNDRED AND FORTY FIVE – WHEN RESCUE ID FARAWAY
As the day wore on, Kayla found herself constantly moving from one crisis to another. The clash between the corporate mindset and the more practical needs of survival was creating a volatile atmosphere.
"This is ridiculous," complained Regina Hawthorne, a high-powered lawyer. "I have a corner office bigger than this entire shelter. How am I expected to sleep here?"
Beside her, an elderly couple exchanged exasperated glances. The husband, Harold, spoke up. "With all due respect, Ms. Hawthorne, we're lucky to have shelter at all. My Edna's arthritis is acting up something fierce, but you don't hear her complaining."
Regina scoffed. "Well, I'm sure 'your Edna' is used to roughing it. Some of us have standards."
Kayla intervened before the situation could escalate. "Regina, Harold, please. We're all adjusting to difficult circumstances. Regina, why don't you join the team working on improving the shelters? Your eye for detail could be invaluable."
