Chapter 6

"I really think you and Fiona would make a great couple." What the heck?! Elaine almost doubted her own ears. They weren't even divorced yet, and this woman was already tryna matchmake Marcus like she couldn't wait another second? Sure, she wasn't Audrey, but she was in her body now—if she didn't stand up for her, that would just be plain wrong. Elaine stood up all of a sudden, took a deep breath, then walked over with a polished smile. Diana and Fiona noticed her first, but Elaine didn't even spare them a glance. Instead, she went straight up to Marcus and casually placed her hand on his shoulder, her tone sweet: "Babe, so this is where you've been hiding." "I stopped by your office and couldn't find you." Even Elaine herself got goosebumps saying "babe." And judging by Marcus's expression, he sure felt the same. Back then, Marcus wouldn't even let Audrey touch him, but now—though he looked uncomfortable—he didn't push Elaine's hand away. Elaine soon pulled her hand back and flashed Marcus a flirty little smile. He frowned instinctively. He had no idea what she was doing here, but knowing her, she never did anything without a reason. After sitting down, Elaine acted all surprised to just now notice Diana and greeted her, "Oh wow, Diana, is that you?" Diana's brows scrunched, clearly not thrilled to see her. Elaine didn't care and turned her eyes to Fiona. This girl really had some nerve—flirting with a married man like it was no big deal. Was she that desperate? Elaine tilted her head and asked with fake curiosity, "And she is...?" Diana hesitated, didn't look like she wanted to answer, but Elaine was faster: "You must be Miss Foster, right?" Her words were sweet, but her stare had sharp edges. She added, "The second daughter of Valtros Group—I've heard the name." Right then, Fiona's face noticeably stiffened—was that panic? Fear? Guilt? All of the above? And Elaine caught it all, loud and clear. But she didn't stop there. "How's your sister doing these days?" she pressed on. Fiona's hands clenched tightly. "I have no idea what you're talking about." Tch. Elaine couldn't help but scoff inwardly. Guilty conscience, much? Fiona was basically the poster child for it. Marcus noticed Fiona's weird reaction too—and he also started really watching Elaine. He never paid much attention to Valtros Group before, thought it was just some small-time company compared to the Orion Axis Group. Frankly, he didn't even know they existed. Though he and Audrey were technically married, they barely knew each other. Still, he was pretty sure Audrey had no connections with anyone from Valtros. Elaine knew she couldn't say too much just yet—didn't wanna spook Fiona. But man, just seeing her sitting there made Elaine's blood boil. If she didn't let some of it out, she was gonna explode. "You have a sister named Elaine, right?" And boom—there it was. "Heard she just came back into the country." Fiona's face turned downright nasty now—a textbook guilty look. If she and her mom had nothing to hide, why wouldn't she just admit it? "Funny thing is, I've been trying to get in touch with her, but no luck. Any clue what she's up to lately?" Elaine asked again.
