"Sit down first. I need to talk to you," Matthew said, putting away his usual smirk and replacing it with a rare seriousness.
Serena was still fuming inside and honestly wanted to walk out, but when she caught that hint of hope in Matthew’s eyes, she sighed inwardly and sat back down. When it came to him, she never had much of a backbone.
"Go ahead," she said quietly, arms folded, face unreadable but clearly distant.
Her mood was written all over her face. Matthew, clearly out of his depth when it came to smoothing things over with a woman, froze for a second, unsure of how to even begin.
Seeing him like that, Serena’s heart softened a little despite herself, and her tone eased. “Just say it. If it’s something I can help with, I will.”
“That’s not what this is about.” Matthew’s voice dropped a notch. Realizing she’d misunderstood again, thinking he needed a favor, he added, “Did you see the statement Lucas put out a few days ago?”
